Gun Control and Unification: Biden's Actions in Context

With President Biden's recent unveiling of six executive actions aimed at curbing gun violence, the debate over gun control continues to stoke tensions across the United States. As a firearms enthusiast with over 50 years of experience, I can offer a nuanced perspective on whether these actions can help promote a unified nation or merely exacerbate existing divisions.

Divisions in American Society

It is unlikely that we will see a civil war as a result of President Biden's actions. However, his proposed measures may not achieve the desired unification. The issue of gun violence is just one among many deep-seated divisions in American society, encompassing economics, healthcare, civil rights, crime, drug policies, and foreign relations. The divide between the 'left' and 'right' extends to nearly all aspects of life, with diametrically opposed views and entrenched positions on each issue.

The Limitations of Proposed Actions

President Biden's six executive actions, though well-intentioned, may not significantly impact gun violence. These measures often consist of symbolic gestures that are designed to appeal to various interest groups. For example, legislation proposed by legislators from both sides of the aisle to address the issue is typically aimed at appeasing their respective bases, rather than achieving substantive change.

Firearms enthusiasts view any mention of 'gun control' with strong opposition. However, the question is not whether 'gun control' could contribute to unification. The more pertinent question is whether any proposed action can bridge the wide gap between opposing viewpoints. As long as at least half, or more, of the population is against such actions, it is difficult to achieve a unifying effect.

The Reality of Gun Violence and Its Causes

The majority of firearms deaths, especially those involving handguns, are driven by factors beyond mere possession restrictions. While the "80%" market, which caters to criminals, is certainly a concern, the reality is that if someone wants a gun, they will find a way to obtain one. This can be through straw purchases or theft, regardless of the measures in place.

Mass shootings, on the other hand, are often associated with 9mm handguns, which are commonly used in such incidents. While enhancing bail reforms and other progressive policies in major cities might target repeat offenders, the majority of those involved in mass shootings are typically gang members or individuals glorifying violence.

Solutions Beyond Gun Control

To truly address the issue of gun violence and promote unification, a broader approach is needed. This includes:

Throwing Away the Key for Repeat Offenders: Implementing harsher sentences for repeat offenders to discourage criminal behavior and deter others. Enhancing Minimum Sentences: Increasing minimum sentences for offenses that involve firearms and drugs, such as drug trafficking or carrying a firearm. Fair and Balanced Red Flag System: Establishing and enforcing a fair and balanced red flag system to remove access to firearms from individuals who pose a serious risk to themselves or others. Fair Mental Health Reporting: Improving mental health reporting to better identify and address potential mass shooters.

While these measures can help reduce gun violence, it is essential to recognize that mass shootings are a complex issue with multifaceted causes. Even with these improvements, such incidents are unlikely to be entirely eliminated, as they often stem from factors beyond the scope of gun control measures.

It is clear that addressing the root causes of gun violence and promoting unification requires a multifaceted approach. While President Biden's actions are well-intentioned, they must be part of a broader strategy that includes community support, education, and addressing the underlying issues contributing to violence.

As we move forward, it is crucial to maintain a balanced and open dialogue that considers both the benefits and limitations of various approaches. Only through a comprehensive understanding of the issues can we hope to achieve a more unified and safer society.
