Is 17 Years Too Old to Start Learning Photography?

Many people believe that age should be a barrier in pursuing their passions. However, the belief that starting photography at 17 is too late is a common misconception. In reality, there are numerous examples of individuals who began their photography journey well into adulthood, and they have thrived in this creative field. This article aims to dispel the notion that beginning at 17 is too late to start learning and pursuing photography.

No Age is Too Old to Learn!

The journey of learning photography is not confined by age. Despite starting at 17 or even later, many successfully embark on this creative path. At 17, you have the advantage of understanding complex concepts more deeply, and access to a wealth of resources such as online tutorials, classes, and communities can significantly aid your development. Whether you are 17, 32, or 40, there is no age limit to learning photography. Embrace the journey and dive into the wonderful world of photography.

Personal Testimonial

Earlier in life, at the age of 25, I thought about taking photography lessons but felt intimidated and began experimenting with my camera on my own without much success. At the age of 32, I felt the need to elevate my passion and understood that I might be perceived as too old in a predominantly younger community. However, at the age of 40, I decided to enroll in a two-month intensive photography workshop, starting in March 2017. This experience illustrates that age is merely a number on a calendar, and the drive to learn and create can transcend it.

That being said, age should not be a deterrent. Learning photography is accessible and rewarding for anyone at any age. Moreover, it is never too late to pick up a camera and explore the art of photography. Just get a good entry-level camera, go out there, and start exploring! Everything else will follow naturally.

Additional Insights

Age is not the prerequisite for learning. There are numerous examples of individuals who continue learning and growing after retirement. People in their 70s and 80s are enrolling in graduate programs, studying for MBAs, and pursuing PhDs. The key to success is the willingness to learn, not the age at which you start.

Beginners can start with a good entry-level camera and begin exploring their local environment. Read about different subjects, learn about optimal shooting times, and explore common spots in your area. Start by replicating popular shots and you will soon find yourself creating your own unique images. Connect with local photographers and participate in group walks or workshops. As you progress, you will realize that the only limiting factor is your perspective and the time you can dedicate to the craft.

As a personal example, I myself began photography at the age of 16. This experience has shown me that starting at any age is entirely feasible. By embracing the journey and practicing consistently, you can achieve great success in photography.
