Understanding and Embracing Desire: A Path to True Contentment
Understanding and Embracing Desire: A Path to True Contentment
Have you ever wanted something really bad but felt disappointed when you finally got it? Thatrsquo;s the nature of ldquo;Strong Desire.rdquo; Itrsquo;s something you should not have but took anyway because you were out of control.
My story is a perfect example: Irsquo;ve wanted this woman since 2009. Finally, I got her, but we just broke up after a year. Similarly, I entrusted those men who hated me and ended up being betrayed. They said, ldquo;Wersquo;re backing Fred, and wersquo;re not trying to bring back slavery, rdquo; about the same time I was thanked for the nice Travelodge motels, only to trash them.
Even with a human existence that every creature craves, I still feel unfulfilled due to the extreme struggles of life. This is completely normal. A well-known psychologist, Lacan, once said that our desires cannot be satisfied and our expectations will never be fulfilled because that is what makes us human. Pursuing our dreams, desires, and happiness is what keeps us alive, what makes us wake up every morning with a smile and purpose.
Unfortunately, just because you achieve something significant or accomplish what you set out to do, it doesn't guarantee happiness. There is no magical solution or big thing that will suddenly make your life easier or happier. True happiness comes from learning to enjoy the process, from the small, everyday things, and from the search for things that make you feel fulfilled, not just the outcomes.
Our Struggles and Milestones
I was a pretty lonely kid growing up, being fat, a bit of a geek, and lacking in self-confidence and self-esteem. I dreamed of having actual friends because the few I had were only tolerating me because of my neighborhood. Now, looking back, I know this to be true. As I grew older, gained more self-esteem, and self-confidence, I began to have an abundance of amazing friends, including one who is even more amazing than the best friend I always dreamed of having. Our friendship is stronger than Sam and Frodo's in Lord of the Rings.
Contrary to achieving these dreams, however, I still experience moments of unhappiness. This is due to various reasons: my health, my inability to work, living below the poverty level, approaching middle age without significant accomplishments besides my wonderful friendships, and struggles with depression, all making it difficult to be happy.
Embracing Contentment Amid Struggles
Itrsquo;s essential to acknowledge that itrsquo;s okay to be unhappy sometimes. Life is full of ups and downs. However, if yoursquo;re unhappy all the time, even when you have good things in your life, itrsquo;s a sign that you need to address it. Depression is a very real thing affecting millions of people. If you find yourself struggling, seeking help from a professional can make a significant difference.
Focus on the good, enjoy the trip, and embrace the process. Happiness often comes when you least expect it. Remember, true contentment often lies in appreciating the journey, not just the destination.
