Weird Encounters with Teachers: A Journalist’s Perspective
Weird Encounters with Teachers: A Journalist’s Perspective
As a journalist covering the education beat, I had some unique and unexpected encounters with teachers over the years. Some of these interactions were both professionally important and personally peculiar. In this article, I will share two of the most unusual experiences I had with teachers as a working reporter.
A Young Teacher’s Flirting and Professionalism
One such encounter took place with an eighth-grade teacher from a small town. He was young, active, and very enthusiastic about social justice issues. He often encouraged his students to participate in community events where they could address these matters. I would frequently cover these events, which meant I had to interview him regularly for the local newspaper.
One day, during an interview, he brought up his newfound passion for running and asked if I would be interested in joining him. I was flattered, but as a professional, I needed to maintain a level of detachment. He asked if there was some kind of barrier to our meeting up, and surprisingly offered a reason that was both surprising and enlightening.
“Oh, I thought that maybe you weren’t interested in short Jewish guys.”
This remark made me take a step back, taken aback by his assumption. I interviewed him to keep things professional, not because of any romantic interest, and it seems he never considered that factor.
A Senior Boxer’s Creepy Invitation
Another encounter stood out because of its creepiness. For a feature piece on a professional boxer, I interviewed an older gentleman who was 30 years my senior. He exuded an air of flirting during the interview and eventually asked if he could take me out. Despite the professionalism required, I couldn’t shake off this unsettling feeling.
Later, he surprised me by sending me a stuffed animal and a rose to my office. This was certainly a strange and unwelcome gesture, adding to the already unwelcome attention during the interview.
Teaching and Student Expectations
Before moving on to the weirder encounters, it’s worth mentioning an instance from my teaching experience. I recall teaching 7th and 8th-grade Latin at a Catholic school. One of my students had an impressive 95% average in the class. However, the student’s mother called to express concern, suggesting that we needed to get him “back on track.”
I explained to her that a 95 average was already considered excellent and that expectations of achieving 100% consistently were unrealistic. Fully expecting to disagree with me, she instead expressed agreement and we made a pact to both focus on what worked for the student.
Conclusion
These experiences, while unusual, highlight the complex and often delicate relationships students, parents, and teachers can have. As a journalist, these encounters underscore the importance of maintaining professional boundaries. They also reflect the diverse and sometimes challenging environments in which educators and reporters operate.
