Weirdest and Most Awkward Experiences for Door Delivery Adjusters

Working as a delivery driver can be a mix of exciting and unexpected experiences. I worked for Domino's for several years during college in the 1980s, and here are some of the weirdest and most awkward experiences I had while making deliveries.

Harassment and Intimidation

One memorable incident occurred when I had to deliver a pizza to a slim kid, 6 feet tall, to a very physically imposing woman. She was tall, heavy-set, and quite aggressive. When I arrived at her apartment, she slammed the door to her apartment behind me and locked it, taunting me by saying she might permanently scare me with threats to rape or rob me. She was ultimately only laughing—this was her plan to scare me and make fun of my physical appearance. When I returned to the shop, the police were called. This was before cell phones were widely available, and she had been reported and blacklisted by every delivery place in town.

Interrupting a Romantic Interlude

Another unusual delivery led me to the wrong house because of a weird street layout. Two houses next to each other had the same street number but were actually on different streets. I knocked on the wrong door and was met by a very irate and sweaty man in a robe. His partner, who was clearly in the middle of a date, came out a moment later. It was the middle of a workout session, and they were definitely not happy that I had interrupted their night. They took a stern look at the situation and closed the door in my face.

Witnessing a Near- Robbery

A more thrilling incident involved one of my colleagues. On a delivery mission at a motel on a Saturday night, a man opened the door to me fully clothed. Behind him, I saw a naked woman in bed with only a blanket pulled up to her waist. She showed no interest in covering up and seemed to be watching TV from a random remote that was within reach. My colleague had a $50 bill that he couldn't break, so he went to his buddy's room to get change, leaving the door wide open. The woman continued getting into the TV. It was a surreal moment for certain, especially considering the priority levels of the man's interests during a critical time.

Chasing a Would-Be Car Jacker

My buddy had a particularly memorable incident when he chased a car jacker. They were just a few miles away from our shop, but he somehow didn't realize the police station was only a half block away. My buddy led the would-be thief straight to the station, purposefully creating a dramatic chase. He skidded to a stop in front of the station to get the officers’ attention, and it worked; the car jacker was arrested on the spot. My buddy was fired for resisting a robbery, but it was worth it for the nice late 60’s Chevelle he received from the police. This kind of incident truly made our deliveries more adventurous.
