Exploring Multiple Ways to Earn Extra Income During College: Lessons from the Past
College life is a unique phase in a student's life, filled with new beginnings, academic challenges, and the opportunity to explore ways to earn extra income. In this article, we delve into two personal experiences that highlight effective strategies for generating extra income. Whether you're a current college student or someone who wants to inspire others to succeed, these lessons can help you find a pathway to financial success.
1. Teaching Mathematics as an Extra Income
During my pursuit of engineering, I had the opportunity to tutor mathematics to intermediate 11th and 12th class students. This experience was not just enriching academically but also economically rewarding. I was paid around Rs. 3,000 per month, approximately 3 kilometers, for tutoring two students. This nominal fee may seem insignificant, but it provided much-needed financial support.
What made this venture particularly beneficial was the consistency and the satisfaction of aiding students in their academic journey. Teaching not only supplemented my income but fostered a sense of responsibility and passion for education.
2. Working for an Advertising Agency
The Experience
In 1984, during college holidays, I worked for an advertising agency called Asha Publicity in Pune. The agency specialized in selling hoardings and banners on streets and street lamp posts. A group of us worked for a month, and our earnings were based on a commission structure. Large street-side banners were priced at Rs. 12,000 per month, while smaller ones on lamp posts cost Rs. 2,500 per month. We received a 0.5% commission for each hoarding or banner sold.
Despite the low commission, a few of us managed to sell three lamp post banners for a 6-month contract, earning a total of Rs. 225. The experience involved extensive daily cycling to and from the advertising company office and visiting clients. Every morning at 8 AM, we had to cycle to the office to get details on available spots, with the best spots going to the early birds. By the end of the day, around 6 PM, we had to report back to the office and update our progress.
The commission was paid only after the client had paid for the deal, which often took several weeks of hard work and effort. This experience was rigorous in terms of physical and mental effort, especially during the peak summer months of April and May. However, the immense hardship brought its own rewards.
The Rewards
One of the most significant perks of working during the summer was the extensive knowledge of Pune's geography. We became familiar with every nook and corner of the city, including some of the more notorious areas. This led to a deeper understanding of urban landscapes and an appreciation for the city's infrastructure.
Lessons Learned
From these experiences, a few key lessons emerge. First, consistency in work often yields better results than sporadic efforts. Tutoring provided a steady income, whereas the advertising job was more unpredictable. Second, networking is crucial. Building relationships with clients and colleagues can lead to more opportunities and better commissions. Finally, perseverance and determination are essential. The advertising job was demanding, but the rewards came with hard work and dedication.
These experiences not only provided financial support but also equipped me with valuable life skills such as time management, communication, and resilience. Any college student seeking to earn extra income should consider these methods, but always prioritize their primary academic responsibilities.
Conclusion
Both tutoring and working in the advertising industry offered unique opportunities to earn extra income during college. While the advertising job was physically and mentally demanding, it provided an invaluable understanding of the city and built a strong network. Tutoring, on the other hand, provided a steady income and a sense of fulfillment in helping others. These experiences demonstrate that multiple income streams can coexist, provided they are managed effectively.
For current college students or anyone seeking to generate extra income, these strategies can serve as a roadmap. Remember to balance your commitments, prioritize your education, and always strive for excellence in all your endeavors.
