My Journey with Apple: A Decade-Long Affair
My Journey with Apple: A Decade-Long Affair
My relationship with Apple, the brand, started way back when my first real computer was an Apple IIgs. It was my first major foray into personal computing, and it left an indelible mark on my life and career.
Early Beginnings
My computing history began as far back as I can remember, with an old TRS-80 in my early childhood. However, it was the Apple IIgs that truly ignited my passion for technology. The Apple IIgs was not just a tool for me; it was a doorway to a world of endless possibilities, where I could learn programming languages and create my own software.
Applewriter and VisiCalc
The highlights of my early computing experience with Apple were the incredible software applications like Applewriter and VisiCalc. Applewriter, a powerful word processor that included a programming language called WPL, allowed me to explore the world of programming in a user-friendly manner. I was equally blown away by VisiCalc, a bootlegged spreadsheet application that changed the game for business owners and professionals alike. These tools were a huge part of my journey, and they set the stage for my evolving relationship with Apple.
Transition to PC
As time progressed, the personal computer landscape evolved, and Apple faced a significant challenge from the PC market. I, like many others, transitioned from Apple to IBM PCs, feeling the pull of brand compatibility and affordability. It took until the release of WordPerfect 5.1 before a PC truly matched the capabilities of Applewriter. This was a period marked by my willingness to switch based on the best value proposition, a trait that many have described as a 'slut' for technology.
Apple’s Revival and My Commitment
It wasn't until the advent of MacOS X with its UNIX underpinnings that I rekindled my relationship with Apple. The Power Mac G5, for instance, was a stunning machine that continued the legacy of Apple's excellent attention to detail and formidable performance. Over the years, my collection of Apple products has grown to include a MacBook Pro, a Mac Mini, iPods, iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs. Each device has been a testament to Apple's engineering excellence and innovative spirit.
My current setup primarily involves a MacBook Pro 15” 2018 with an Intel i9 CPU, 32GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD. This machine is not just a tool for work; it's a symbol of the trust and satisfaction I have in the Apple brand. Additionally, a Mac Mini serves as a dedicated stereo system, run by Audirvana and iTunes, enhancing the audio experience in my home.
Customer Service and Design Philosophy
One of the key factors in my continued loyalty to Apple is their customer service. A close call ten years ago with my MacBook Pro still stands out. The experience of going to an Apple store to replace the case for free after damaging my laptop was a testament to their dedication to customer satisfaction. While some might not appreciate Apple's design philosophy, I find it both aesthetically pleasing and functionally superior.
The Future of Apple
Apple isn't going anywhere soon, and I have no reservations about continuing my relationship with the brand. Whether it's an improvement in their laptops, phones, or any other products, I'll always be there to support them. After all, it's not just about the hardware; it's about the ecosystem and the seamless integration of technology in our daily lives.
