As a programmer, one of the most rewarding experiences is creating innovative solutions that make a tangible difference. My journey has been marked by a plethora of awe-inspiring projects, from real-time spacecraft command systems to groundbreaking trauma detection sensors. In this article, we explore some of the coolest things I have achieved in my programming career.
A Space Odyssey: Real-Time Command and Control Systems at NASA
One of my most memorable achievements occurred when I worked on real-time spacecraft command and control systems for NASA. I supported mission controllers during the Pioneer Venus and Saturn encounters, which took place during the 1970s and 1980s. I had the privilege of collaborating closely with mission teams and even remotely piloted a spacecraft in orbit around Venus. These experiences were transformative, and they certainly provided my 15 seconds of fame on network TV.
During my tenure, I also worked at a couple of startups that eventually became unicorns. My involvement in these projects was immensely rewarding, both financially and personally. One of my projects involved developing a COBOL debugger that offered similar functionality to the MFC debugger, showcasing my prowess in programming languages and systems analysis.
Working in mission control and supporting these vital projects brought me immense satisfaction. The camaraderie and the intense focus required were genuinely gratifying. Reflecting on these experiences, I find them intrinsically linked to my overall passion for programming and problem-solving.

In the world of web development, one of my early forays into video sharing involved creating a video sharing site. Although much simpler and less sophisticated than YouTube, it was a significant milestone in my career. My intention was to create a platform that allowed users to share and discover videos, similar to YouTube today. My website was named Vidroo.
Upon completion, I had to decide whether to launch my site or keep it hidden. Although it was a proud moment, I ultimately decided against making it public. I felt that with the advent of YouTube, the market was already saturated, and there was little room for a new entrant. However, the experience of building such a platform armed me with valuable knowledge and skills that I would later apply to other projects.

Another groundbreaking project I was part of involved developing sensors that could be worn by US warfighters. These sensors helped detect and report exposure to blast wave impacts leading to traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The aim was to ensure that individuals could receive the necessary treatment, preventing further injury and long-term damage to their brains.
Participating in the DARPA Eyes project was extremely exciting and an honor. The thought of helping brave men and women protect our freedoms and those of others around the world carries a profound emotional weight. The work involved in this project was rigorous, but it was also incredibly rewarding. Seeing the results of our efforts and knowing that they could potentially save lives was an exceptional feeling.
