Why Doesn't PM Modi Answer RTI Questions?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been heavily criticized for demanding accountability from his political opponents while ignoring his own transgressions. His policies and actions have raised questions about integrity and transparency, particularly when it comes to the use of public resources and his own conduct under scrutiny.

Double Standards in Accountability

Modi is notorious for demanding details and accountability from his political rivals, such as the Congress Party's then-President Sonia Gandhi, who faced allegations of travel expenses costing over 1880 crore rupees. However, when it comes to information about his own actions, Modi has been reluctant to provide the necessary transparency. The stark contrast between his demands and his own inaction has led many to question his credibility and motives.

Unchecked Travel Expenses

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet members have traveled extensively to countries across the globe, and their expenses have raised eyebrows. According to a report, his travels to over 60,000 locations have cost the exchequer crores of rupees. This massive expenditure has fueled further criticism, as it raises doubts about the efficiency and transparency of government spending.

RTI Disputes in Gujarat

In another instance, an RTI activist from Vadodara, Trupti Shah, sought transparency in the travel expenses of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his ministers. The activist filed an RTI application on July 18, 2007, requesting information about the expenses incurred during a series of women empowerment sammelans in 27 places across Gujarat in 2007.

The General Administrative Department (GAD) provided a list of places visited by Modi from March 10, 2007, to September 2007, but did not supply any information regarding the expenses. Despite multiple requests and reminders, Shah received no response from the GAD. Frustrated, she filed a complaint under the RTI Act and approached the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of Gujarat. In the last hearing on September 26, 2012, the CIC directed the GAD to provide the relevant information to Shah before the next hearing in October.

However, the officer concerned stated that the required information was not available, although they had requested the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) and other ministers to provide it. This raises serious questions about the accountability and transparency of Modi's administration, especially when it comes to the use of public funds and organizing large-scale events.
